Surgeon General Report:
There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke

Surgeon generals Report on The Health Consequences of Involuntary Exposure to Tobacco Smoke The Surgeon General’s report, The Health Consequences of Involuntary Exposure to Tobacco Smoke, released Tuesday, June 27, 2006 in Washington, DC, shows that there is no longer any scientific debate that secondhand smoke causes serious diseases, including lung cancer (more than 3,0000 lung cancer death nationwide annually), heart disease (more than 46,000 deaths nationwide) and respiratory illnesses such as bronchitis and asthma, and that the only way to protect everyone from these health hazards is to completely eliminate exposure. The report makes it clear that other approaches, such as smoking and non-smoking sections and ventilation technology, do not eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke.

This is the most comprehensive scientific report ever produced on the health harms of secondhand smoke and marks the first time the Surgeon General has issued a report on secondhand smoke since 1986. Materials on the Surgeon General’s report can be found at www.cdc.gov/tobacco.

For more information regarding secondhand smoke, clean indoor air or quitting tobacco use, please call the Jackson Tobacco Reduction Coalition at (517)768-2131 or click here to visit their website. For help quitting, you can also call the Michigan Quitline at 1-800-537-5666. According to studies conducted by the Centers for Disease Control, “Tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of death and disease, causing approximately 440,000 deaths annually in the United States. Smoking is a major risk factor for cancer, heart, and lung disease. For every one person who dies of a smoking-attributable disease, there are 20 more people who are suffering with at least one serious illness from smoking.”
