RUNWAY SAFETY PROJECT
The runway safety project entails two major components; the extension of Runway 14-32 from its current 3500 feet length to that of 4000 feet along with installation of safety areas at each end; and, the relocation of Runway 6-24 to an orientation of 7-25 complete with 1000 feet safety areas at each end. Runway 7-25 will be 5350 feet long. Both runways will be 100 feet wide.

1) Phase I construction on Runway 14-32 began on August 20, 2007 . Initial work involved clearing trees from the areas to be excavated and clearing all roots and vegetation from this same area. The primary contractor is Hoffman Brothers of Battle Creek, Michigan with engineering services provided by Mead and Hunt of Lansing, Michigan.

2) Phase II construction started in July of 2008 with Runway 14-32 being re-opened on November 26, 2008. The remaining work to be completed includes: commissioning of the PAPI’s on both approaches; installation of LED taxiway lights; and, grooving and full-rate painting of the runway (2009).

3) The Runway 7-25 project has entered land acquisition and environmental investigation phases along with preliminary discussions with the FAA and MDOT-Aeronautics about relocation of the airport’s Snow Removal Equipment building.
