Mission Statement:
The Equalization Department goal is to assist all local taxing authorities with fair, equitable and uniform assessing practices. To educate all citizens of Jackson County on Assessment Administration and the benefits for all, if administred properly.
In conformance with State directives, the Equalization Department is constantly working to assure accurate, fair, equitable and uniform assessments on all properties located within Jackson County.
2008 Equalization Department Goals/Objectives:
To continue focusing on building and maintaining good relationships with all levels of governement. To get the GIS parcel layer updated with 2008 data with both the assessment data and section maps. Staff was able to balance the total county's equalized values in a timely manner. Provided more uniformity in the Assessing and Tax Roll preparation, by education being provided to the local assessors and treasurers. Assisted any township or city assessing personnel with projects they feel overwhelmed by, in order to ensure proper action. Assisted the local School Districts, District Library and JTA with millage renewals information and data.
2009 Equalization Department Goals/Objectives:
Continue to offer quality service to the taxpayers of Jackson County and the taxing authorities in the County. Continue to complete all reports due to the State of Michigan and the Board of Commissioners in a timely manner. Continue to monitor the foreclosures for the influences on the real estate market and the values of residential properties. Keep the GIS parcel layer up to date and work towards a quarterly updating process. Offer educational sessions to all certified assessing officers in the County. Provide a Board of Review workshop for all newly appointed members.
