Responsibilities


The Records Division is responsible for the orderly keeping and efficient processing of all of the following Department items:
  • Firearm Permits
  • Identification
  • Records Management
  • Registrations
  • Reports
  • Requests

Hours

General: 8:00am-5:00pm

License to Purchase: 8:30am-4:30pm

Fingerprinting: 8:30am-4:30pm



Obtaining Records

Request for any record must be requested trough a Freedom of Information Act Request (FOIA Request) to the Jackson County Office of the Sheriff. This FOIA request can be completed online, by email, by fax, or by United States Mail.

Fingerprinting

The Sheriff's Office Records Division has the capability of taking electronic Live Scan fingerprints or the old fashion ink prints.

License to Purchase a Firearm (LTP)

You will only need a license to purchase a firearm if you are buying a handgun from an individual. If you are buying a handgun form a federally licensed dealer, they will complete the paperwork for you and a LTP is not needed.
Must be 18 years old or older to obtain a License to Purchase.
  • Respond to your local Police Department or Sheriff's Office with a driver's license or state ID. A LPT can be obtained from any Michigan police agency that issues LPT. You do not need to obtain a LPT from the jurisdiction in which you reside.
  • Pass a background check.
  • Once the LPT has been issued you have 30 days to use it.
  • After you purchase a handgun you have 10 days to return the registration copy back to the agency where you obtained it. It can be mailed back.
  • You must keep the purchasers copy of the LPT with the gun for 30 days after the purchase.

Pistol Sales Record

If you are buying a handgun form a federally licensed dealer, they will complete the paperwork for you and a Pistol Sales Record is not needed. If you have a Concealed Pistol License and you are buying a handgun from an individual you may use a Pistol Sales Record.
